Podcast glossary
- RSS feed
- The XML file listing your episodes; directories and apps read it. Your host generates it.
- Download
- A request for an episode file. The IAB counts downloads with rules that filter duplicates and bots; "IAB certified" stats follow them.
- Upload hours
- Total length of audio you add in a billing period. Buzzsprout meters this.
- Bandwidth
- Data sent to listeners. "Unmetered" usually means subject to fair use.
- Dynamic ad insertion (DAI)
- Ads stitched into episodes at download time, so old episodes can carry current ads.
- Private podcast
- A feed limited to authorized listeners, via passwords or per-person feed URLs.
- 301 redirect
- A permanent redirect of your old feed URL to a new host, so subscribers follow you.
- Separate-track (multitrack) recording
- Each participant recorded on their own track, so you can fix levels and cross-talk per person.
- Local recording
- The recording happens on each guest's device and uploads afterward, so connection glitches don't affect the audio.
- LUFS
- Loudness unit. Podcasts often target around −16 LUFS (stereo) for consistent volume across apps.
- Text-based editing
- Editing audio or video by deleting words in its transcript.
- Chapters
- Timestamps with titles inside an episode, shown in supporting apps.
- Show notes
- The episode description text, often with links and timestamps.
- Affiliate link
- A tracked link that pays a referrer a commission. Ours are marked "Ad".
